Quilted Hawaiian Print Handbag

Took Chris to the airport yesterday, picking up Ryan today (he's here for the 1/2 Ironman). I had a few hours to myself and decided to work on a project I've had in mind for sometime...

I wanted the purse quilted, so picked up some lining fabric and batting and
quilted the body of the purse and the two end panels.

Next, I cut out 2 strips of the main fabric 3"x45", sewed the ends
together and made one continuous strap

I attached the strap to the body of the purse

Carefully, so not to catch the straps in the seam,
I sewed the two ends together and put in a zipper

I turned the whole piece inside out and sewed the end pieces,
I even put a small pocket overlapping one end for keys or a cell phone.

The quilting took the most time, but I'm pretty happy with the final product!

10 Days Left at the Hawaii House

It's almost time to head back to the mainland :(  My 2 months here have flown by.  Chris leaves this Sunday, Ryan comes Monday for his 1/2 Ironman Saturday the 5th, then we head home on Sunday.  We fly to Italy on the 8th for the family bike trip...wowsers, lots going on.  I walked around the house this morning and took a few shots of some of my favorite things...I miss this house so much when I'm away.

Jewelry Travel Pouch

I've needed a travel pouch for some time to keep all my jewelry in one spot in my luggage.  Also handy to put things in before going through the x-ray machine at the airport.
Here's a tutorial for making one...it was sort of a design as I went...hope you can make sense of it.  You'll need 2  7" zippers, 2 small pieces of velcro, 1 36" piece of  rope or other material for the tie, 1 piece of outer fabric 9" x 14", 1 piece of lining fabric 9" x 14", 6 pieces of lining 5" x 9" each, and 1 piece of lining 3" x 8"
Sew one side of the velcro near the end of the small lining piece (this will be the ring/earring loop)
Sew right sides together, turn right side out and press

Make a sandwich of 2 lining pieces and sew close to zipper (use zipper foot to get close)

Fold fabric right sides out away from zipper

Do the same thing on the other side of the zipper with 2 more pieces of lining

Should look something like this

Repeat first step of zipper construction with the other zipper and the final 2 pieces of lining
Before attaching final side to zipper, sew other part of the velcro in place, match up velcro on strap
and sew strap in place (reinforce well)

Now, iron both rough edges of second zipper piece under and sew zipper into seam

Your piece should look something like this now.
Sew lining piece to zippered piece wrong sides together

Attach the rope or tie to the right side of the outside fabric (reinforce well)

Topstich along one zipper edge in the middle of the piece through all thicknesses
to create two separate pockets

Sew outside fabric to zippered piece right sides together leaving a small opening
on one side to turn the assembly right side out.  Trim seams and corners. Turn right
side out and press.

You now should have two pockets, one velcro strap for rings and earrings.
Happy traveling! Just fold whole pouch in thirds and tie closed with rope

New twist to the zipper pouch

I still have a bunch of fabric scraps leftover from the tote bags, so decided to experiment a little and make a more "exciting" pouch.  This is what I came up with.

And this is what I got from WalMart during our big
shopping adventure to Kona.
Wonder what the next project might be???

Starfish Pillow

I had some fabric leftover from my totes, but no zipper, so figured I'd make an envelope style pillow for Kipp and Andrew's bedroom.  It's easy,  just overlap two pieces that combined measure the same as the back.  Sew all the way around the edge, right sides together, then turn right side out through the overlap. Tuck pillow insert in and you're in business.  I have a bunch of the starfish, thought it added a touch of the beach...just what the Hawaii House needs.

Leaf Stationery

I needed some stationery in a hurry (gallery meeting announcements) so got out my stamp pad and a couple of hibiscus leaves...
And my totes and pouches all wrapped up ready to mail to my friends.
Made with Aloha :)

I Found A Heart

We played golf at Hapuna yesterday.  Just off the 18th green there was a Kiave tree being trimmed (think it was damaged in the wind) I couldn't pass up the shot...would have been perfect for Valentine's Day:)

Bride tote and zipper pouch

I promise!  This is my LAST post about tote bags and zippered pouches!!!  But, I had this really beautiful white on white Hawaiian fabric, and my best bud's daughter is getting married in September...so I thought I should make the bride to be a tote and pouch for her to carry around all her important wedding planning stuff.

And while I'm at it...here are my two latest totes with matching pouches.
