Master Bedroom Pillows

Well... I'm finally getting around to "decorating" the master bedroom of the Hawaii House. I've been concentrating on the other rooms, but think it's time to add a little something to our room. Starting with pillows (surprise!!!!) I think I've made 25 (or so) pillows for the house (drives Chris nuts) but I like them. They're easy and make a quick impression. I stuck with white (think the architecture of the house does most of the decorating) but think they're pretty cute. I used freezer paper once again for the stencils...just print out the words you want to use on the computer, place your piece of freezer paper over the text and cut out with an xacto knife.  Remember to keep the centers of letters like a,e,d,b etc...you'll need to iron them onto your fabric as well.  Place the freezer paper on your fabric shiny side down and iron.  Use a foam brush or stencil brush and gently fill in the cut out letters.  You may have to go over it a second or third time after drying to get an opaque image.  Remove the freezer paper once dry and sew the pillow.  Stuff with a pillow form and you're finished.

Bleached Hawaiian Shirt

I need to take a present to Christian tomorrow that he'll think is cool. I'm baking cupcakes and frosting them with green icing...but thought he should have a cool new "Hawaiian" shirt too. I've seen a few people in blogland doing the bleach on dark cotton t-shirts...a project I tried a loooong time ago and thought it would be a fun way to make a little boy's t-shirt cool. I started with a black t-shirt (100% cotton) from Target ($5.00), a bottle of bleach and some freezer paper. I cut out stencils of hibiscus flowers and ironed them to the t-shirt. I then mixed a very strong solution of bleach and water...5 parts bleach to 1 part water and carefully dabbed it on with a foam brush. It only took about 2 minutes for the black of the t-shirt to start turning a very pretty rust. When I was satisfied with the color of the bleached sections, I washed the t-shirt to remove the bleach and stop the process. I think it looks neat, we'll see what Christian thinks tomorrow!

"Bat" layette

I'm having lunch with Kipp's sister-in-law tomorrow to loan her the family cradle. There are 31 brass plaques on it...representing the 31 babies that have spent their first few months in it. This is a repeat family (we like those) and the tradition lives on! I needed to make a baby present (can't show up empty handed) and since the last name is Batley...bats are a fun theme. Not very baby-like...but oh so cool. I took contact paper and cut out a bat silhouette, adhered it to the silkscreen and printed 4 onesies and 2 t-shirts (for big brother) Too cute and it all took me about 15 minutes.

Turtle Notecards

Wow...have I been productive lately. I think my great scan and blood test have given me a new lease on life! I painted two watercolors, printed 40 notecards and printed and sewed more pillows just in the last 24 hours. Maybe this blogging thing really works! My Etsy store is giving me a place to "post" my items...but still as yet...no sales :( At least my watercolors are still selling in the gallery. I think I've been thinking about the Hawaii House (since Kipp is there and I'll be back in early April) so my work is getting "tropical". The turtle notecards were fun...LOTS of Xacto knife work...but a cool image. The phildendrom leaf made for a graphically clean pillow.

It's Pillow Day

I've been meaning to make these for a while (for my Etsy shop)...finally got around to it today. I silkscreened yesterday, sewed the pillows today. The dog pillow on an earlier post was done with freezer paper as the stencil...I like the silkscreen version a lot better. The image is cleaner and more opaque...and I screened 8 of them in about 10 minutes!

Care Tags

I needed cloth "how to care for" tags for my Etsy pillows and wasn't sure how to make them. Then it struck me... iron some freezer paper to a piece of fabric cut to 81/2"x11" (computer paper size) and run it through the printer. It worked!!!! I used the Avery address label software for the layout...printed a sheet of 30 images. After cutting the individual tag, I put an eyelet in the corner, ran some twine through the hole and safety pinned it to the pillow. How cool is that?!

Happy March...it's white flower day!

It is so windy on the Big Island today...no playing outside in the sunshine :( Thought I'd post photos of some of the flowers growing in the yard...hope they all make it through this blast!
